The European Extremely Large Telescope

The Extremely Large Telescope is one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by astronomers. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the ELT will have a 39m-diameter main mirror and will enable observation of distant objects currently beyond reach and improve sharpness of images – possibly allowing us to characterise the atmospheres of extrasolar planets.
